Wow!! I don't know how I manage to let so much time go by between blogs. I could say that it is a sign of a busy life, yes I do have a busy life, but I'm not sure that it is that busy. I have some new things happening this month which will hopefully improve the regularity of me posting here.
Earlier in the year I did a short sewing course - 2 hours a week for 8 weeks. I loved it!! I've always been a creative and crafty person but I've never had so many ideas floating around in my head as I have had since I started this course. This course has really kick started something.
I've also been following The Uniform Project for the last 9 months or so. One year ago Sheena started wearing the same dress every day but accessorising so that she had a unique outfit to wear each day. One year later she has worn the same lbd for 365 days and raised nearly $80,000 USD for charity. It is worth checking out the story and the photos of each outfit.
A few other things have been going on in my life in the last 12 months or so too. I've been thinking a lot about sustainability and my part in making our world sustainable. I've been trying to reduce the junk that I seem to have collected over the last few years. I've been doing much more second hand shopping (or thrifting), I've been trying to reduce the amount of money I spend each week, I've been involved in the 1 Million Women campaign (check this one out if you are an Aussie women), I've been thinking about the slow cooking movement, I've been creating more things, I've been thinking about starting my own business.....
All of these things seem to be starting to culminate in me changing a few things in my life. The first of these things is that I have signed up for a 2 month pledge to Wardrobe Refashion. For the next 2 months I will not be buying any new clothes. Any clothing I acquire needs to be thrifted, refashioned or handmade. I think this may be a challenge, there have been a few thing on my I need and I want lists for a few months now that might need to be acquired in a more creative way than just going out and purchasing now!! I'm hoping that taking on the challenge will be just the start, I hope that it will be the start of me looking at my clothes is a new light. I've already started moving forward, in the last few months I've made a modified a few things already. You might also remember The Pile, some progress has been made on the pile which contains several things that need refashioning, or just shortening so they fit. I also had a big clean out of my cupboards a few months ago so all the clothes that I'm no longer wearing have either been sent to second hand stores or put in a pile for refashioning. I'm hoping that these next two months will be great for improving my sewing skills and also making me look at clothing in a new light and seeing the potential in things.
So, without further ado, here is my pledge:
I, Josephine, pledge that I shall abstain from the purchase of
"new" manufactured items of clothing,
for the period of 2 months. I pledge that I shall refashion,
renovate, recycle preloved items for myself with my own hands in
fabric, yarn or other medium for the term of my contract. I pledge that
I will share the love and post a photo of my refashioned, renovoted,
recycled, crafted or created item of clothing on the Wardrobe
Refashion blog, so that others may share the joy that thy thriftiness
brings!
Signed, Jo
Watch out for further developments. I'll get some photos of my recent sewing/refashioning up soon, just need to be home in some daylight to do so.
